# Why does ChatGPT not mention my business?

> ChatGPT leaves a business out because it cannot read the site, because the site does not answer the question asked, or because nobody else on the web mentions it.

Almost always for one of three reasons, and they come in order. Either ChatGPT cannot read your site (a block, a page that is blank without JavaScript, or no presence in Bing), or it has read you but no page answers the buyer's question in its first paragraph, or nobody else on the web mentions you. Work through them in that order. The [free check](https://llmsbureau.com/check) tests the first two causes: the block and the blank page.

## How ChatGPT finds a business

ChatGPT has three ways to know about you, each with its own user agent, the name a program gives when it asks for a page.

| Route | User agent | What it is doing |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Training | `GPTBot` | Collects text for future models: what the model remembers without searching. |
| Search index | `OAI-SearchBot` | Builds ChatGPT's own search index. |
| Live fetch | `ChatGPT-User` | Fetches a page while answering a real person: one hit is one answer served, whether or not anyone clicks. |

The routes feed each other. On 9 October 2026 OAI-SearchBot took 35 pages of our address-tracing site, launched on 29 September 2026. Of the 24 answers ChatGPT served from that site in its first fifteen days, 21 came in the four days after that crawl (our address-tracing site's server logs, 29 September to 13 October 2026).

One route does not imply the others. After eight days live, ChatGPT's search crawler had taken only the home page of investigationbureau.uk and Bingbot had fetched four pages, yet ChatGPT-User had fetched twelve pages while answering eight questions (investigationbureau.uk server logs, 5 to 13 October 2026).

## Reason one: ChatGPT cannot read your site

Rule this out first; it is quickest. A site is unreadable in three ways.

### You are blocking it

A rule in your `robots.txt`, the file that tells crawlers what they may read, that disallows `GPTBot`, `OAI-SearchBot` or `ChatGPT-User`; a firewall that answers anything bot-like with a 403 ("forbidden") error; or a one-click "block AI crawlers" switch at your CDN, the service in front of your site, often turned on to stay out of training without noticing it also shuts out search and live fetches. The site looks fine in every browser and does not exist to the assistant. The free check shows a block in ten seconds.

### Your page is blank without JavaScript

No AI crawler we have logged executes JavaScript (Vercel and MERJ crawler study, 2025; our own server logs, 2026). If the server sends an empty shell that fills itself in the browser, ChatGPT receives the shell: a title, perhaps a loading message, nothing else. See [do AI assistants read JavaScript websites](https://llmsbureau.com/guides/do-ai-assistants-read-javascript-websites).

### You are not in Bing

ChatGPT search leans on Bing as well as its own index, so a site Google knows and Bing barely knows gives it little to search, and those answers go to a competitor it can find. Owners rarely notice, because the search engine they use shows the site ranking.

## Reason two: the page does not answer the question

Once the crawlers are in, the question is whether it would pick you. An assistant answering "how much does a tracing agent cost" wants a page that says what one costs; a home page that opens with a welcome and a slideshow answers nothing, so it is cited for the brand name and little else.

In fifteen days ChatGPT fetched the home page of our address-tracing site eighteen times and the pricing page once (our address-tracing site's server logs, 29 September to 13 October 2026). The home page fetches were likely brand or category questions and the pricing fetch likely someone asking what a trace costs, though the questions themselves are only visible in Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report and Search Console's AI report. Each page was cited for the one question it plainly answers, and for nothing else.

The London investigation firm in our [case files](https://llmsbureau.com/case-files/a-london-investigation-firm), which we do not name, published an OSINT (open-source intelligence) service page on 6 September 2026. Within a month it was the second most cited page on the site, with ten landings, visits that arrived from an assistant (the firm's own analytics, 24 July to 7 October 2026).

This is the expensive reason: the assistant has your page in hand and still names a competitor whose page answers the question. Schema markup, the labels in page code, and llms.txt, a text file at your domain, do not cure it: controlled tests found neither moves citations by itself (Ahrefs, May 2026; Google, June 2026). The Audit lists which pages and which questions for your developer.

## Reason three: nobody else mentions you

If ChatGPT can read you and your pages answer the questions, yet it still names a competitor, the gap is off your site: assistants weigh what others say about a business more than what it says about itself.

- 84% of links cited by assistants point at third-party media, not the company's own site (Muck Rack, 25 million cited links, May 2026).
- Brand mentions on other sites correlate with AI visibility about three times more strongly than backlinks (Ahrefs, 75,000 brands, December 2025).
- Reddit is the single most-cited domain on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity (Ahrefs and Semrush citation studies, 2026); YouTube mentions are the strongest single correlate with being named, a correlation of 0.74 where 1 would be perfect (Ahrefs, December 2025).
- Businesses with 80 or more answered reviews appeared in 75% of AI answers, against 1% with none (Seer Interactive for Trustpilot, March 2026, vendor-commissioned).

The same London firm shows the signals assistants weigh: named senior staff, fixed quotes, an ICO (data protection) registration, 23 reviews, a London address and three years of trading. ChatGPT sent it 2 visitors from 24 July 2026, 14 in August, 43 in September and 5 in the first seven days of October (its own analytics, 24 July to 7 October 2026).

This is the slowest of the three to put right and the one most often mistaken for a website problem, so the money goes on a redesign that cannot touch it. The free check cannot see it; the Audit can.

## How to tell which applies

Stop at the first row that fails.

| Check | How | If it fails |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Anything blocking the crawlers? | Look in `yourdomain/robots.txt` for a Disallow naming `GPTBot`, `OAI-SearchBot` or `ChatGPT-User`, and at your CDN for a block-AI-bots switch. | Reason one. |
| Readable without JavaScript? | Turn JavaScript off in your browser and see whether your text is still there. | Reason one. |
| Does Bing know you? | Search Bing for `site:yourdomain` and compare the count with Google. | Reason one. |
| Has ChatGPT fetched you? | Search your server access log for `ChatGPT-User` and `OAI-SearchBot`. Analytics tools cannot see this. | Still reason one after a few weeks; hits with no mention means it can read you. |
| Does one page answer the question? | Ask ChatGPT what a buyer would type, not your brand name, and compare the page it cites with yours. | Reason two. |
| Does anyone else mention you? | Search your business name in quotes. Count reviews, listings and press. | Reason three. |

The [free check](https://llmsbureau.com/check) does the first two rows: we fetch a domain's robots.txt, llms.txt, sitemap.xml and home page live, as a browser and as `ChatGPT-User`, `GPTBot`, `ClaudeBot` and `PerplexityBot`, so a block aimed only at bots shows up, and count the words that arrive without JavaScript. The fourth row needs your server log; [how to know if ChatGPT has read your website](https://llmsbureau.com/guides/how-to-know-if-chatgpt-has-read-your-website) shows what to search for. The last two are judgement, which is where the [Audit](https://llmsbureau.com/pricing) earns its fee: it works all six rows and writes the fixes for your developer.

## What happens once it is fixed

No one can promise a mention, and we do not. Our own two sites, both new domains with no backlinks, served their first answers inside their first fortnight: our address-tracing site 27 in fifteen days, 24 of them ChatGPT (server logs of our address-tracing site, 29 September to 13 October 2026); Investigation Bureau 8, all ChatGPT, in eight days, with one click-through on 8 October (investigationbureau.uk server logs, 5 to 13 October 2026). The three-year-old London firm turned 68 visitors sent by assistants into 8 taps on its phone number, 3 contact forms and one instruction (a paid engagement) worth £3,300 (its own analytics, 24 July to 7 October 2026). More in the [case files](https://llmsbureau.com/case-files).

## Questions people ask

**Does ChatGPT use Google?**

No. ChatGPT search draws on Bing and on its own index, built by OAI-SearchBot, and fetches pages live with ChatGPT-User. Google's index feeds Google AI Overviews and Gemini.

**I blocked GPTBot to stay out of training. Is that why I am missing?**

Possibly. GPTBot alone is the training crawler, but most one-click block-AI settings block OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User too, and some firewall rules refuse anything with bot in its name.

**Will adding llms.txt fix it?**

Not on its own. Two controlled tests, by Ahrefs in May 2026 and by Google in June 2026, found that adding the file did not change how often a site was cited. A site that is blocked, blank or unmentioned stays that way with or without one.
